The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler (Scholastic)

Welcome to day 3 of ‘The Ugly Five‘ blog safari! This iconic picture book pairing need no introduction. The creators of the contemporary classic ‘The Gruffalo‘ Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, have produced yet another overwhelmingly addictive rhyming romp.

The Ugly Five‘ introduces five grotesque creatures, each of whom are proud of their ungainly appearance and embrace their outer hideousness.

Meet the spindly-legged wildebeest, the bald lappet-faced vulture, the spotty hyena, the dumpy warthog and the gangly marabou stork.

Perhaps not the finest looking bunch you ever did see, but certainly a most jubilant one.

A defiant celebration of our differences and embracing what makes us unique, this makes a perfect read for a younger audience, particularly in the current climate.

Both funny and heart-warming, we are under no illusion that this too will become a bedtime favourite and one that will be recited off by-heart in homes all over the nation.

Join the rest of the blog safari and don’t miss out on the Facebook Live chat with the pair over on Mumsnet at 6pm this evening.
