Petra by Marianna Coppo (Lapis Edizioni)

13873134_10154245483210446_564682122587357725_nWe spied this eye-catchingly simple book on Instagram and just knew it’d be a keeper.

Those lovely people at Lapis Edizioni kindly sent us a review copy. It’s on sale in Italian and there are plans for an English co-edition.

13879220_10154245483240446_1373925313243317256_nPetra‘ is a stone, but this is no normal stone, no, this is an extraordinary stone. She is an egg, a mountain and even an island.

This stone sits in the same spot day in, day out. “Nothing can move it.  Not the weather, nor time. Others come to it.

13873159_10154245483315446_1929636060982108051_nUntil that is, one day when an inquisitive dog takes a fancy to the lone stone and decides to uproot Petra and move her from the spot where she always stood.

The stone is thrust into a completely new environment, but how will Petra cope in her new surroundings?

13901508_10154245483330446_5422730451912497290_nWhat will become of the solitary stone?

Marianna Coppo‘s subtle and understated illustrations are full of character and texture and you can’t help but take this inanimate object to your heart from the first glance at the cover.

13892132_10154245483365446_3627967984873442551_nThe expressiveness in those two large eyes and the little mouth, encapsulate all that’s great about this utterly adorable character. The playful way in which perspective is used too, is very clever. It’s not until we see Petra alongside the dog that we realise just how small she is.

A simple yet powerful story, it clearly illustrates the power of perspective and the strength of our imaginations.

13886280_10154245483380446_6254863349033854070_nJudging by the response we’ve had from just tweeting a few pictures of the book, we know that it will be well received.

Petra inspired us to make our own pet rocks and encouraged us to make our very own Petra. Watch out for her coming to a shelf near you soon!
